In the printing industry, a flying paster is responsible for ensuring continuous production on the web press. It basically works on the phenomenon of pasting an expiring roll into the next one so that the press can run continuously, without slowing down or taking a halt. The term ‘flying’ refers to its attribute of accelerating the roll to the same speed of the press, followed by the splicing task. In fact, it performs the same functions of a zero speed splicer. Large presses come equipped with either of the two. Flying pasters are generally found on the high speed presses. Listed below are the components that make up a flying paster:

1.  Roll Stand
The roll stand is responsible for mounting and holding the rolls in position. Ideally, a flying paster will be capable of holding two to three rolls, wherein one would be running on the press, and the other two would be ready for splicing.

2.  Dancer Roll

Also known as the floating roller, this part of the unit aids in pulling the paper from the roll and ensuring control on the brake holding the roll. Its primary purpose is to control the amount of paper being released from the roll and being fed to the press. Simultaneously, it also maintains the tension between itself and the roll.

3.  Metering Roller

The function of a metering roller is to make sure that the press receives tension consistently.

4.  Web Sensors

There are sensors located on each side of the web, which indicate the exact location of the roll. These sensors can be adjusted so as to enable the flying paster to move the roll accordingly.

5.  Splicer

The splicer is responsible for joining the moving roll to the new one with the help of a special piece of two-sided tape.  When the roll reaches the speed of the press, the splicer presses the expiring roll onto the tape, and then quickly cuts it through.
